View of the Drive on Penninsula
Can you believe they pass on this road? Signs read
"slippery when wet" or "Danger- wide loads". Yikes!
We got up, packed, and drove several hours and saw a sign for the the local Visitors Center . We assumed it would be just up the road a bit, but 15 winding, unpaved miles later, we arrived near the top of a mountain and spoke with the Park Ranger there. They had many taxidermied native animals that were most interesting. He also explained how the native Kauri Tree (similar to our Redwood) has become nearly extinct by the past massive harvesting, a large portion of which was sent to San Francisco to construct their buildings and sidewalks. (I wonder why, when the Redwoods were so handy? I forgot to ask)
The hike we wanted to take was not 3 miles round trip, but each way, so we didn’t have time. He offered to let us stay in the “hut“ up near the top, but gee, we chose to pass.
Big Decision time. We knew we wanted to do some sea kayaking, and take in the natural Mud Spa’s on the beach, on this peninsula, but we were told the weather tomorrow afternoon would be really bad. We also wanted to hike the Coastal Walkway, but that would take all day. So we chose to skip yet another hike and take the AM to sea kayak. We headed off toward Hahei, another coastal town, on the other side of the peninsula.
We managed to do what we promised we would not. We drove about 8 hours today. Norman tried to limit our daily drive to 3-4 hours, then do an activity. Oh well. Hopefully we won’t make a habit of it, because we were really beat!

Took advantage of the great weather and cooked outside again. Tomorrow we plan to go to a restaurant.
