The weather today looks like rain; the temperatures, by the way, have been very warm for this area, in the 80’s. Humidity down today, a great day to do the 5 mile cliff walk we planned. This was a beautiful area where the cliffs meet the sea. We started off by walking 30 minutes along a beautiful beach then headed straight up 262 very steep steps. The path continued gradually upward for several more miles while we marveled at the incredible coastline! Cicadas (bugs we hear at home in the summer) are so plentiful here that it is often deafening in the woods. One flew down my neck while golfing, and this one landed on my arm. They are only 2 inches long, not the 8 that it appears in the photo (thank God ).
We traveled nearly to the end of the route that then descends 331 steps to the sea, but since we were very aware that we could not walk back via the beach because of the incoming tide, we decided to save the knees and return as we came.
Very lovely day; headed to the next campsite which was back near downtown Auckland. This site was very busy with large groups, but was not too bad. Had an unusual mix of people - a fraternity group and some large religious gathering. No fights broke out. Cooked dinner at the communal stove, played some cards and went to bed.
