Woke up to a very cloudy start. While we were having breakfast, a helicopter landed, and Norman went to talk to the pilot. The weather was not good for flights, so we decided to go hike to the biggest of 60 glaciers in the park - Franz Joseph.
We contemplated going with a group up onto the glacier, but since there were dozens of people in a group, and it was potentially going to be very slippery and rainy, we decided to just hike to the base of it on our own. Thank goodness we made the right decision. Half way into the hike, it poured! We had the proper rain gear, so it was still pleasant, but we could not imagine how slippery it must have been with all that rain on the ice! Rock hopped over a few streams, and took some hopefully great pictures. We got back to the camper and had to deal with all that soaking rain gear.
We decided to drive a half hour to the next glacier, but it was pouring so hard we just got to a campsite to catch up on stuff and relax for a change! The weather is so weird here.
One minute it will be pouring to beat the band, and the very next, sun and a rainbow, then followed by more rain. Once in a while we can see the glacier up in the distance, then the next it is socked in by clouds. We certainly hope tomorrow will be nice so we can get up in a helicopter, or at least when we drive we can see the snow capped mountains.
Norman has seen the Swiss Alps, but I never have, so it is really important to me to see these.
